Week of January 28, 2017 – Mom’s Birthday and More

Last week my mom celebrated her 94th Birthday! Because she had been a quilter when she had good eye sight I decided to make her a little Birthday Cake Quilt and you can see it here. It is just 11” x 11” and has a cake that says, “Happy Birthday!” on it. It brought a smile to her face and that made me happy. Milestones are great to celebrate, and I think once you reach 90, each year past that is really a milestone.

I have also been making some other little quilts. Recently I purchased Edyta Sitar’s book, Little Handfuls of Scraps.  It has a number of vintage quilts pictured and then 32 patterns and pictures of quilts that she has put together. I love all of them!

This first one I tried is called “Sophie” (they are all named after different women) and it is made up of a Moda 2.5” charm pack with a few extra fabrics of my own. I decided to hand quilt it since I need a little extra practice and I love a small hand project to work on while I watch a movie or TV at night. Isn’t it just charming?

I loved it so much that I made another one from a different Moda 2.5” charm pack. This one is mostly blue, white and tan fabrics and I machine quilted it. Both quilts are 10.5” x 13”. This is just the perfect size for a little antique doll bed or to hang on my “Doll Quilt Clothesline”.

The last picture is from the same book and is called “Daisy”. I made two identical quilts of this pattern. One I used in my Doll Quilt Divas group for our Christmas doll quilt exchange and then of course I wanted one for myself. It is 12.5” x 16.5”. This is more like the size you would want for an American Girl Doll.

I am having so much fun making quilts from this book I am wondering if any of you would be interested in joining me once a month at Wooden Spools and we could make a quilt a month together? We could try it for at least four or five months and practice a variety of different blocks and methods (piecing and applique).

Let me know at the email below and if we have enough interest I will set something up with Vicki.

Just for You – Quilt Quote “A mother’s hug lasts long after she lets go. Blessed are the children of quilters who can wrap in her quilts to remind them of her love.”
