Whether you are going with a dark background – or a light background – as Kate talked about at the launch meet-up last week – it’s going to be gorgeous! Still undecided… you know that choosing fabrics for a quilt is our favorite thing to do; if you want some help, stop in and we’ll help you!
Block number one is called “Aurora” and is an easy, sweet little block to get started with! It is made up from eight Half Square Triangles and one Square in a Square. Here are our first blocks. Maybe that will give you some ideas about color placement. Maggie’s block was made with Sheila’s supervision. (Isn’t she pretty?)
Thanks to a nice conversation with a customer last week, I’d like to pass on a couple thoughts. When we were planning our quilts, we all made a pile of fabrics that we liked with our chosen backgrounds, and some of us assigned and followed the chart for using fabrics A, B, C etc., some of us did not. And the thing is, they all turned out great. So, trust yourself! As you put together these blocks, if a different fabric feels better than the one you previously assigned to that block – USE IT! Use the fabric you like where you like it. Trust yourself!!
Our recommendation is to follow Kate’s hint in the cutting instructions and to make your cuts a little larger than listed so you have some wiggle room to square things up perfectly after you sew and press.
Luminous is a “Block of the Month” pattern with 6 blocks total. We’ve planned a little more than one block per month in our QAL, but you’ll have PLENTY of time to stay on schedule if you want! (Remember though, it’s never a race! The goal is a finished quilt – whether it’s at the end of our QAL or in a year!) We will be sharing tips in our newsletters, which come out every two weeks, and we will finish up around the end of July.
Along the way, if you have questions or need help, we’re here for you! Here’s the timeline for the QAL – you’ll see that we have carved out time on some Saturday mornings when you can just drop in with questions! There are also some dedicated sew days to bring your quilt and work on it with other Luminous QAL-ers! See all of those dates below:

We have dedicated some times for you to drop in for any help you would like. These will be from 10 am to 12 pm on the following Saturdays: (casual – just drop in anytime – we’ll have experienced Luminous quilt makers in the house!)
