At the age of eight Joan Pluess’ mother taught her how to sew which started her on the path of becoming has been a lifelong crafter. At the age of 14, she taught herself how to crochet and her love affair with yarn began. Eventually her interest in sewing expanded into fashion design. She even graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design in Los Angeles! For many years she made her living as a custom seamstress and designer. Through the years when she was raising her children, Joan expanded her interest in crafting by cross stitching, sewing and crocheting for friends and family.
In 2004, in honor of a friend’s life who was an avid knitter, she taught herself how to knit and a new passion was born. In 2013, she earned a teacher’s certification in both knit and crochet through the Yarn Council and began teaching at two Michael’s stores. The first time Joan walked into Wooden Spools, the friendly clerk recognized her scarf from the cover of Vogue Knitting Magazine and she knew she had found a knitting and crochet home. She now exclusively teaches for Wooden Spools and is best known for her “Bring Your Own Project” classes. She coaches beginning students who are picking up a crochet hook or knitting needles for the first time as well as advanced students learning new techniques such as lace and colorwork.
Joan’s passion for her craft is truly contagious and she loves to share her knowledge with others. She believes the most important decision a person can make when starting a new project is choosing the yarn. If you love the yarn, you will love your project.
