Here at Wooden Spools you will find a wide variety of quilting fabric.  We carry everything from vintage feed sack fabric to currently produced lines.  We purchase most of our fabric from quilters…”reviving” that wonderful fabric that was stashed away and never used!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT KIND OF FABRIC DO YOU BUY?

We purchase 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabric that is in the same condition as when you purchased it new!

A few examples of Quilt Shop Quality fabric manufacturers:   Moda, Hoffman, Robert Kaufman, Timeless Treasures, SSI, Blank Quilting, Red Rooster, RJR, Windham, Free Spirit, Marcus Brothers, Henry Glass, Benartex, Art Gallery, (This is not a complete list – please call if you have questions)

I HAVE SOME FABRIC THAT I PURCHASED AT JO-ANN FABRICS.   IS THAT QUILT SHOP QUALITY?

Jo-Ann fabric, Hobby Lobby, VIP Cranston, Springs Industries, etc. fall into the category of “chain store quality” and at this time we are not purchasing chain store quality fabric.

WHAT ARE YOUR REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CONDITION OF THE FABRIC:

We are very particular when it comes to deciding whether or not to purchase fabric.  It must be:

  • NEW, unused
  • From a non-smoking home
  • No odor (for example – storage odors – mustiness, moth balls, etc.)
  • No pet hair
  • No fading on the fold lines, stains, etc.
  • Straight, smooth edges – no fussy cuts!
  • No pre-washed fabric

The bottom line is that it should be in exactly the same condition it was when you purchased it off the bolt originally!

IS THERE A MINIMUM SIZE THAT YOU WILL PURCHASE?

Yes, all fabric pieces need to be a quarter yard minimum, either

  • Fat Quarter 18” x 22” or
  • Quarter yard 9” x full width of fabric, with both selvage edges

I’VE ALREADY TRIMMED THE SELVAGE FROM MY FABRIC, IS THAT OK?

No, all fabric pieces must have:

Both selvage edges

Fat quarters should have one selvage edge

Folded selvage to selvage

I HAVE FABRIC THAT IS ON THE BOLT.   DO I NEED TO REMOVE IT FROM THE BOLT?

No, we can weight it right on the bolt and adjust for the weight of the bolt.

DO YOU PURCHASE CHRISTMAS, HALLOWEEN AND OTHER HOLIDAY FABRIC?

Yes!

HOW MUCH FABRIC CAN I BRING AT MY APPOINTMENT?

The general rule is: Up to 50 lbs. of fabric per appointment.   If you have more, just let us know when you call and we will make special arrangements.  We may need to schedule more than one appointment for you.

HOW MUCH DO YOU PAY FOR FABRIC?

We will pay up to $6 per pound for quilt shop quality 100% cotton fabric, and $7 per pound for batiks.

HOW SHALL I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?

Our price that we pay for your fabric is based on you going through it first and making sure it meets all of our requirements!

Please check your fat quarters and make sure that they are 18” wide and 21 to 22” long!  Just open them all up flat as you check them and bring them in that way.

Coordinated fat quarter bundles can stay bundled

Look at each piece of fabric and be sure it’s folded selvage to selvage – with no fussy cuts or fade lines – and is at least ¼ yard.

If we need to spend extra time going through your fabric, trimming pieces etc. we may need to adjust the amount that we’ll pay.

HOW AND WHEN WILL WE BE PAID?

After dropping off your fabric, we are generally able to get it all processed within a few days.  We will contact you and let you know if there were items we said “No Thank You” to.  You can then pick up your check (and those items) or we can donate those for you and mail your check!

DO YOU BUY KITS?

Yes!  We do buy kits!  Please make sure it is complete – and with the pattern!

WHAT OTHER ITEMS DO YOU BUY?

We also buy:

  • Notions
  • Books (need to be pretty current)
