Knit Your First Sweater
taught by Michelle Bowman

Can you knit a sweater that actually fits? Of course you can! This class offers a gentle beginning and encouragement into the world of sweater knitting. If you’ve never understood gauge, or are worried that something you make won’t fit, this class is for you. We will learn about and work with gauge and gauge swatches, and we’ll learn how to take measurements and why (and how much) they matter. We will discuss the qualities of yarn that make them better choices for sweaters. We’ll knit the sweater using a relaxed-fit sweater/cardigan pattern that is written for different gauges as well as different sizes, and you’ll be guided through every step of the knitting and construction process. The final class will include resources and advice for continued learning.
We are offering this class in a hybrid format—you can attend in person at the store, or you can attend via Zoom, and you can choose how you’d like to attend for each class session. There are some technology requirements for Zoom: students should access the video portion of class with something larger than a smart phone, and the device must have both 2-way audio and video, so teacher and student can both see and hear each other well. Students can access class using one device for audio and one device for video. Not sure if your device(s) will work? Ask for a ‘tech check’ and we’ll connect you with the teacher to run a test before you sign up for class.
Students should also have a way to view and print PDF handouts.
Class will be 7 2-hour sessions, with intervals between classes spaced out to give students sufficient time to complete each section of the sweater.
Prerequisites: Students should know:
- knit stitch and purl stitch
- the difference between stockinette and garter stitch fabrics
- increase and decrease methods
- how to count stitches and rows
Experience with shaped projects, such as hats, mittens, and slippers, will also be very helpful. If you’re not sure if you have experience enough to be successful in this class, let us know and we can have the teacher contact you.
This class is best for age 15+ and adults.
$95.00 for all 7 sessions
