If you’ve never had a pair of custom fit, handknit socks, you are in for both a journey and a treat! Socks are THE best knitter’s project: since they’re small, you can work on socks even during the hot months of the year; everybody needs socks, so they make great gifts; and, they have their own major niche in the knitting world. After you learn basic construction, there are all sorts of methods to refine fit, function, and design.

In this class, we’ll start with a very basic cuff-down pattern, written for DK weight yarns. We will discuss basic fit and sizing considerations, and knit a crew-length sock with a traditional flap-and-turn heel and Kitchener-closed toe. And, we will discuss alternatives for all of these construction elements. We will knit samples in class for practice, then you can take the techniques home and work them into your class project.

Prerequisite knowledge

Students should be comfortable with knit stitch and purl stitch; knitting in the round using at least one method of the following methods: DPNs, magic loop, or 2 circs; cast-on and bind-off; increases and decreases; and know the difference between stockinette and garter stitch fabrics.

This class is designed for a range of knitting abilities, from post-102 and up—if you’ve successfully knitted a hat in the round, this class could be the next skill-building class for you. More experienced knitters will have an opportunity to build their knowledge too.
