Cabled Cardigan Class by Michelle Bowman

Cabled sweaters are the quintessential knitted garment. A timeless technique, cables can evoke a homey, comfortable look—or a modern, structural texture.

Starts January 21st!

In this class, we will knit a bottom-up cardigan, The Oban Cardigan, by Thea Colman, chosen for a simple-but-interesting cable design and a comfortable, loose fit—and, pockets! This will be THE cardigan you choose when you want a warm, snuggly garment on a cold day. It’s knit in one piece up to the armholes, then fronts and back are separated to complete the bodice. Then, sleeve stitches are picked up around the armholes and knit in the round down to the cuffs. Button bands and short-row shawl collar are picked up and knit last.

We will learn about how to knit cables—both with and without a cable needle—and read cable patterns. We’ll discuss why particular yarns work better for cabled items than others, how to make simple fit modifications in cabled patterns, and what to look for in a cabled pattern to make those adjustments easy. We’ll also go over how to fix simple mistakes in cable knitting, and steps to take to minimize the need for corrections.

Prerequisite knowledge

Students should be very comfortable with all of the following: knit stitch and purl stitch, knitting in the round and using either DPNs, magic loop, or two circs, cast-on and bind-off, increases and decreases. Students should know the difference between stockinette and garter stitch fabrics, and be familiar with blocking and measuring gauge. Experience with short rows is helpful, but not required. This project should not be the first sweater you’ve ever knit and finished, but it could be your second sweater.

This is class is presented via Zoom. There are some technology requirements: students should access the video portion of class with something larger than a smart phone, and the device must have both 2-way audio and video, so teacher and student can both see and hear each other well. Students can access class using one device for audio and one device for video. Not sure if your device(s) will work? Ask for a ‘tech check’ and we’ll connect you with the teacher to run a test before you sign up for class. Students should also have a way to view and print PDF handouts.
