Week of May 19, 2019 – Dog Quilts

Do you have a dog?  Does your dog have a special quilt that you have made him/her?  I guess I can’t resist an excuse to make another little quilt, so I like dog quilts.  When I went to pull out my quilts to photograph, I realized that in my divorce I let my ex-husband keep two of the quilts that I made for our dog Enzo (named after Enzo Ferrari).  We only had him 12 years, but he was a very special Shih-Tzu.

The beauty of making a dog quilt is that you can let the fabric do the work for you.  It can be a simple dog quilt like this pink one with 9-patch blocks (19.5” x 25”).  The white fabric with gray paw prints says it all “This is for a special dog”.  I made this quilt recently for a friend who has a toy terrier who only weighs 3.5 pounds at age 9 months!  I thought she needed her own special quilt so I will give it to her soon.

Ok back to my former dog Enzo (he’s been gone for almost 4 years now and I still miss him).  I thought he deserved a special quilt so the next one you see was for him.  It was a little larger (30” x 33”) so I could wrap him up while he sat on my lap.  The center section was made from 3.5” squares.  Because we took him to work every day at our car dealership it has black and white racing fabric with cartoon cars from the movie Cars.  Then it is surrounded by a big border of dog bones (see closeup) for him to enjoy.  I just love it when the fabric tells the story and I don’t have to make an intricate block to convey my feelings.

If you are a dog lover maybe it is time for you to make a special quilt with fabric that speaks “Dog”.  If you have already made one, I would love to see a picture – you can send it to my email below.

Just for You – Quilt Quote: “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.”   And  “Quilt ‘til you wilt!”
